A cylindrical intaglio bead, depicting a king with an animal, daggers and arrows comes from Afghanistan and is about 100 years old, but some intaglio beads can be thousands of years old.
One example from the british library was made in the 8th century bc, 2800 years ago. It was made from a type of clay called faience, and found in the ancient city of Ur, present day iraq.
In ancient times, these beads were used as stamp seals. By rolling them across soft clay, the intaglio design leaves an impression. This was used for sealing documents or marking possessions.
Using my intaglio bead to make an impression into silver clay, it’s possible to fire a solid sterling silver version of these impressions. Here is mine, with dangling pearls, a silk necklace or gemstone beads.
